In a press conference held in the ministry of foreign affairs after the return of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India visit, on January 22 foreign secretary Mijarul Quayes told reporters that an understanding has been reached with Burma (Myanmar) on solving the ongoing maritime dispute.

The foreign secretary said both the countries have agreed for apportioning their territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal on both the principles of equity of resources and equidistance.

The foreign secretary spoke of his confidence in making progress in future demarcation talks with Myanmar since the criteria of demarcation has been agreed.

Comments by Dr. Mohammed Yunus*:
Bangladesh should not be complacent on verbal assurances of Burmese junta given its past records of breaking promises and non-compliance of even written agreements. Burma had broken the promise its No. 2 man has given not to carry out any exploration activity in the disputed waters before maritime demarcation is completed. Soon after this high level visit it sent warships into Bangladesh waters. It openly flouted the two bilateral agreements signed with Bangladesh in 1979 and 1992 respectively for repatriation of Rohingya refugees and creating conditions for preventing further exodus of Muslim Rohingyas from Arakan.

Bangladesh should not take it for granted the enormous military build up by Burma close to its border will not be directed against her. It is most probable that Burma is buying time for making necessary preparations to implement its hidden agenda. During the time of preparations Burma would like to keep Bangladesh assured of no danger coming from Burmese side so that Bangladesh shall remain complacent and take no necessary preparations it needed to take. After making the necessary preparations Burma would like to brow beat Bangladesh into accepting their terms. Past experience has indicated that the relationship of Burma with Bangladesh is more of security concerns rather than economic interest.
